Important Update: UK Travel Requirements for U.S. Citizens

December 16, 2024 Sarah Bichsel No Comments

We want our travelers to be aware of an important change now in effect in the United Kingdom.

Beginning January 8, 2025, travelers from the U.S., Canada, Australia, and other non-European countries must obtain an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) before traveling to or transiting through the United Kingdom. This new requirement applies to all visitors, whether staying in the UK or simply connecting through UK airports en route to another destination.

Each ACIS traveler must complete this process on their own. Your group leader or ACIS cannot complete this for you, but don’t worry! It is an easy process.

The ETA is now mandatory for stays of up to six months for purposes such as tourism, visiting family, business, or short-term study. Passengers are required to secure their own ETA before traveling. The application can be completed online or through the UK ETA App, costs approximately $13 USD (10 GBP), and typically takes about three working days for approval. Travelers can still board flights to the UK while their application is being processed, and approved ETAs are valid for two years.

Application Process

The application process is very simple and will only require your passport, contact information and a credit card to pay the fee. ACIS has created a step-by-step guide to applying for the ETA, so be sure to review this guide in advance to ensure compliance with the new regulations and avoid travel disruptions.

For additional information, visit the official UK ETA website or contact us at accounts@acis.com. We’re here to help ensure your travel plans are seamless and stress-free.

ETIAS Update

We previously shared information on our blog about the EU Travel Information and Authorization System (ETIAS) visa waiver, which will be required for all travel to the EU even if it is for less than 90 days. This waiver system is scheduled to be implemented in mid-2025, but no official start date has been provided. We will provide updates as soon as we have them.
