Why Educational Travel Impacts Students Beyond Academics

Educational travel is known for its academic benefits with visits to historical landmarks and real-world applications to concepts learned in the classroom being much of the focus. These opportunities, as valuable as they are, aren’t the only benefits of educational travel experiences, which go far beyond what students can learn from textbooks. Traveling introduces students to new environments, cultures, and experiences that truly challenge them to grow through real-world interactions.

Through educational travel students develop important life skills that can shape their personal and professional futures. Traveling encourages students to learn and adapt to unfamiliar situations, navigate new environments, build their confidence, and more! These travel experiences help students become more independent and culturally aware, and brings learning beyond the classroom to the next level.

Life Skill #1 – Independence and Confidence

“Many returned with a deeper sense of independence, confidence, and global awareness, and several have even been inspired to pursue future opportunities in international study and cultural exchange.” – ACIS Group Leader Elaine C.

One of the most valuable benefits of educational travel is the opportunity for students is to step out of their comfort zones and build their independence and confidence. Traveling often requires students to go beyond their normal routines and navigate unfamiliar situations, whether it’s navigating through an airport, understanding public transportation systems, or just adjusting to new environments, students will learn to rely on their own judgment while still benefiting from the support of their group and group leaders.

Experiences gained throughout educational travels encourage students to make decisions, solve challenges, and take responsibility for themselves and successfully navigating these experiences helps students realize that they are capable of so much!

Life Skill #2 – Communication and Collaboration

“Watching them order their first croissant in French, navigate the Métro, or stand in awe beneath the stained glass at Notre Dame is something I’ll never forget.” – ACIS Group Leader Holly S.

This opportunity also provides meaningful moments for students to strengthen their communication and collaboration skills, especially considering tours happen with a group. Traveling with peers in a group setting requires teamwork, patience, and the ability to work effectively with others in a variety of situations and with this students can learn how to listen, share ideas, and support one another while working towards common goals throughout the trip.

Additionally, educational travel often exposes students to people from different cultural backgrounds and interacting with individuals who may have different communication styles across cultures encourages students to become more thoughtful and adaptable communicators. Travel experiences around the world help students expand their world view and develop empathy, improve their interpersonal skills, and gain confidence in connecting/communicating with others, even at home!

Life Skill #3 – Cultural Awareness

“The students learned so much about history art trying new foods being aware of other cultural norms…” – ACIS Group Leader Shari K.

One of the best ways to expand students’ perspectives is how educational travel offers students the chance to experience different cultures firsthand rather than just simply reading about them. Exploring local traditions, trying new food, learning and communicating in different languages, and just observing daily life within other cultures are very helpful in raising cultural awareness and students can gain a deeper understanding of diversity across the world. These experiences encourage students to approach different cultures and customs with more curiosity and respect. It is also a great way to expose students and help them recognize the differences and commonalities that connect people from various cultures, developing their cultural awareness and learning how to connect on a deeper level with people different from themselves.

Life Skill #4 – Problem Solving and Adaptability

“This experience changed all of them and made them incredibly independent, mature and resilient.” – ACIS Group Leader Linda C.

While here at ACIS we try our best to provide the best travel experience for all tours, there may be times where one may need to adapt and these travel experiences can be one of the greatest learning opportunities. Student travel encourages students to develop problem-solving skills by navigating unexpected situations, such as adjusting to schedule changes, travel delays, or any other unfamiliar situations. Rather than viewing these challenges as setbacks, students can learn how to think critically in new environments, stay calm, and find solutions alongside their peers and group leaders.

Adapting to new circumstances also help students become more flexible and resilient during travel experiences where they learn that success comes often when one is willing to adjust, learn, and move forward when things change. Travel experiences help to build confidence in students’ ability to handle uncertainty, a very important skill which will benefit them throughout their academic, professional, and personal lives.

Life Skill #5 – Curiosity and Global Perspective

Exploring the world is an unique way of inspiring curiosity and when students encounter new places, cultures, and environments firsthand, they are often motivated to ask questions and can engage more deeply with the world around them. This curiosity can spark a lifelong appreciation towards learning, acting as a stepping stone to gaining a broader understanding of global issues, cultural connections, and more. As they develop a more informed perspective of the world, students will be encouraged to become more engages global citizens who remain curious long after their student travel experiences.
