New European Entry System

November 7, 2025 Sarah Bichsel No Comments

In October 2025, the EU announced that it would be implementing a new digital European Entry System (EES) for non-EU citizens entering and exiting the Schengen zone.

The Schengen Zone is made up of 29 countries that, since 1985, have abolished their internal borders, meaning you do not have to show your passport crossing between them. That will still remain the case under the new requirements, as this process is for exiting and entering the zone.

What is the EES?

The EES is a digital system that requires photo ID and fingerprint scan to complete the customs process. Travelers will register their information upon arrival at the destination airport and the biometric data provided will be valid for 3 years.

When is the EES going into effect?

Starting October 12, EES is scheduled to roll out over the next six months, with full implementation by April 10, 2026.

What do I need to do to prepare?

There are no additional fees, nor any documentation you need to provide before traveling. You may see some delays in customs as the program is rolled out, depending on where you are traveling and how quickly the new process is has been integrated at the point of entry.

We will keep you posted on any new updates as they come, and remember the ACIS Team is available 24/7 on tour to help your group.

ETIAS

The EES is not to be confused with the European Travel Information and Authorization System (ETIAS, so many acronyms!), which is a fee for any non-EU national traveling to the Schengen.

Though originally scheduled to debut in 2025, ETIAS is now expected to launch by the end of 2026. Get our full update on ETIAS and watch the blog for future information.
