Sorrento is charming, with a small centre and a pedestrianized old town. In the early season it is very quiet in the evenings – you will be hard put to find more than a couple of bars open in the main square (Piazza Tasso) and the via San Cesareo and the shops close early. However, in the summer the town comes alive after dark. The shops stay open until 10.00pm and the whole central area is closed to traffic.

TAXIS are to be found on Piazza Tasso (very expensive!)

THINGS TO DO

Stroll through the narrow streets of the old town, which are packed with shops selling local artifacts, beachwear, fashions and limoncello (some with tastings).

Enjoy the view over the Bay of Naples and Mt Vesuvius opposite from the Villa Communale public gardens next to the Chiostro di San Francesco. From the gardens you can walk down to the beaches (private so no access, but the walk down the cliff is nice), or take the elevator from the gardens down for a small fee).

Walk from the Corso Italia down to the old fishing port, called Marina Grande, with its authentic atmosphere, lots of restaurants and bars. Small crowded public beach in summer months.

Step into the church on Corso Italia beyond via Tasso, which has magnificent wood inlay work decorations.

Join the passeggiata along the Corso Italia between Piazza Tasso and Piazza Lauro, or in the opposite direction (towards the hospital). A lot of ice cream places and cafes.
