Steamboat Ride on Windermere

The boats leave from Bowness Pier or from Ambleside. Bowness is about 8 miles south of Grasmere (A591), through the town of Windermere and along the shores of the lake. Ambleside at the top of the lake a few miles from Grasmere. It’s a half hour by boat from Bowness to Ambleside. Tel: 015394 43360.

Bowness

Bowness is one of Cumbria’s most popular resorts. Full of souvenir shops and cafes, it tends to be very crowded at the height of the season. Now a 40p charge for toilets next to coach park

Rowing Boat – can be hired from the pier.

The World of Beatrix Potter (www.hop-skip-jump.com)

The Windermere Steamboat Museum (www.steamboat.co.uk) – Arthur Ransome’s Amazon and Captain Flint’s House Boat housed there (Swallows & Amazons).

Grasmere

On approaching the village (A591) from the south point out Dove Cottage on the right, behind a group of cottages, but visible, opposite Grasmere Lake and the Hotel. Turn left for the village.

On the right, toilets (30p charge) and telephone.

Cashpoints – currently only one in the Post Office.
