Pamplona
· The aim of this visit is to see the path the bulls run every July – including Calle Estafeta, the Plaza Consistorial in front of the Ayuntamiento. See map below for walking tour route.
· Drop off at the Hotel Tres Reyes (Jardines de la Taconera, s/n. 31001 Pamplona, Tel: 34 948 22 66 00) and walk your group down Navas de Tolosa, taking a left onto Paseo Sarasate. This leads into the Plaza del Castillo, the main square. You could point out the Hotel Perla opposite, which was a favourite haunt of Hemingway.
· Continue diagonally across the square to Calle Chapitela. Veering left, you will reach Plaza Consistorial, with its beautiful Ayuntamiento. This is where the rocket is fired to announce the start of San Fermines. From here, turn back onto Calle Mercaderes and then right again onto Calle Estafeta.
· Calle Estafeta is the most famous and dangerous part of the bullring (there is a 90 degree turn here). This part of the run is full of souvenir shops and lovely tapas bars.
· At the end of Calle Estafeta, you will cross the road and come to the Bull Ring, in front of which is the statue of Hemingway.
· If you want to give the group an idea of what an encierro would actually be like, you can take them to the “Encierro Bull-run” sculpture situated between the bull ring and Plaza del Castillo.
· Lead the group back to Plaza del Castillo and give free time for lunch and shopping. The podium in the middle of Plaza del Castillo is an ideal place to rendezvous with your group, as there are public toilets opposite.
· Lunch: Pamplona is an ideal spot to try out some pintxos (which line the bars of many cafes). Cafes on the square can have very slow service, so warn your group about this. Calle San Nicolas is a good option.
