The two beaches in the bay of ‘la Concha’ are ideal for sunbathing and swimming, whilst Zurriola, with its large waves, is popular amongst surfers.

Monte Urgell

An enjoyable walk up the hill takes you to the remains of a castle and statue of Christ at the summit. Great views from the top.

The old quarter

Plaza de la Constitución is at the heart of the old town – it used to be a bullring – look out for the numbers on the balconies, a ticket was sold for each numbered space. The surrounding narrow streets have many shops and places to sample the local ‘pintxos’ (tapas). The old quarter is an ideal location for a culture quest or similar.

San Telmo Museum

This modern and varied museum is worth a visit. The permanent exhibition covers Basque lifestyle and culture through the ages as well as art from the Basque country and elsewhere. There is also a calendar of temporary exhibitions on photography, design, society and more.

Shopping

The many small shops in the old quarter are good for souvenirs, gifts and crafts. For chain clothing stores and the San Martin shopping mall, cross over the Boulevard to the pedestrian streets leading to the Cathedral.

Pintxos/Bars

The old quarter is best for bars, which have numerous plates of pintxos on offer. Take a plate and help yourself then count up your cocktail sticks at the end.
