  • Departure times will have to be calculated around the time of your visit to the Salt Mines in Hallein.  It is sometimes possible to move this, depending on availability, but call well in advance.
  • From Salzburg, allow 30 minutes to drive up to Hallein.  The mines (Salzwelten, Bad Dürrnberg) are well signposted and are located 8 minutes drive up above the town.
  • Warn the group that they cannot take backpacks or bags down the mines, but they can carry cameras.  Allow them a short amount of time in the souvenir shop and be aware the visit itself will last 90 minutes and the whole visit will last around 2 hours total.
  • You can either return the same way to Salzburg, or alternatively exit right from the mines and drive via Bad Reichenhall, after which you pick up the A8 E52/E60 Autobahn to Munich.  This can give views of Hitler’s Eagle Nest (weather-permitting) after leaving the mines, but will add time on to the journey.
  • Hallein to Dachau is 190km (2 hours 30 minutes).  There are several Autobahn stops on the way for lunch. Traffic can be very heavy at peak times. Remember PASSPORTS as almost all buses are pulled over in the Austria to Bavaria direction.
  • You will travel right round Munich the whole way on the A8, following signs for the Flughafen (airport).  Take exit 2-Oberschleißheim from the A92 towards Dachau on the B471 and follow the signs for “KZ Gedenkstätte Dachau”
  • Dachau is open 7 days a week.  There is new 35 minute long film in the central building that is shown in English at 10.15am, 11.45am, and 2.00pm. It is not as good as the old, shorter version, and is definitely not a “must”.
  • At the camp bus park, the driver pays for parking.  You lead your group the 10-minute walk into the camp.  Point out toilets (in Visitors’ Centre/next to cinema/far left corner of the main admin building), where the various memorials are, and the location of the movie.  The group can wander freely and make their own way back to the coach at the appointed time.
  • Do not rush the visit of Dachau.  Allow ideally a minimum of 1.5 hours for the group to visit, but be aware the camp does close and is locked up at 5pm.
  • The journey from Dachau to the centre of Munich is 20km (via the Dachauerstraße) and should take around 40 mins depending on traffic.
