- Please read the paragraphs on Rome Bus Regulations at the front of the Rome Facts and Free Time Pages
- To get to Rome from FCO airport, take the Leonardo express train from the airport (follow signs from inside terminals) to Termini Station. Most of the hotels we use are within 5-10 mins walking distance from Termini.
- To get to the office directly from Fiumicino, it is faster to take the train to Trastevere, where a fast tram (number 8) runs to Largo Argentina. Cross the Corso Vittorio Emanuele and walk along to your right to find the office.
- To get to the Rome office from Ciampino take the Terravision / SIT shuttle/ A.T.M bus to Termini station (via Marsala), then take the bus to Largo Argentina (either 64 or 40). Walk back a short distance along the street the bus has taken to find the office.
- Taxis are not to be taken without specific instructions from the area office.
Fiumicino Airport (FCO) (aka Leonardo da Vinci)
How to get to the airport – arrival
There are trains to and from Fiumicino airport:
1) Direct train between Stazione Termini and the airport leaving at 05 and 35 (at busier times also at 20 and 50) minutes past the hour. First train: 05.35, last train: 22.35. Trip time: 32 minutes.
2) Local trains between Ostiense or Trastevere stations and the airport depart every 20 minutes. First train: 05.17 from Ostiense. Trip time: 35 minutes.
Split arrivals
If you have an inconvenient amount of time to wait between the arrival of different parts of your group (you need 3 hours to transfer a sub group into Rome and return to the airport for the next arrival) you could take them to the village of Fiumicino (4 km from the airport) to see the fresh fish being brought in. There are lots of bars, some shops and banks. The village is clearly signed as you leave the airport. Alternatively, a short drive would take you to Ostia, where there are nice gelato places along the beach front promenade.
Another possibility (minimum 2 ½ hrs) is a visit to the excavations of Ostia Antica (free entrance for students under 18 with ID), 7 km from the airport. If in doubt call the Area Supervisor.
If you are continuing with your group directly to Sorrento, Florence, Montecatini.
Drive to the ring road Raccordo Anulare (GRA) and join the A1, south to Sorrento or north to Florence (Montecatini). You can stop at an Autogrill on the autostrada for lunch.
| From Rome airport to… | Distance (km) | Approximate driving time |
| Sorrento | 265 | 4 hours 30 minutes |
| Florence | 280 | 4 hours |
| Montecatini | 315 | 4 hours 45 minutes |
| Positano | 300 | 5 hours |
How to get to the airport – departure
Rome/Fiumicino airport is 20 kilometers south-west of Rome. Coming from the centre of Rome, the easiest way is to head for EUR. Shortly before the EUR, the via Cristoforo Colombo splits to the right, direction Sheraton Hotel. This road brings you to the autostrada for Fiumicino.
Approximate trip time: 60-90 minutes depending on traffic.
If your hotel is in the Aurelia area (Holiday Inn, Midas, etc), drive to the closest entry point of the GRA (Raccordo Anulare) and follow signs to Leonardo da Vinci airport.
Approximate trip time 45-60 minutes.
Reconfirmation of flights
Reconfirmation of flights is taken care of by ACIS.
Most airlines require individual check-in, increasingly involving the use of automatic terminals. This procedure takes a lot of time, it is therefore important that you are at the airport 3 hours before departure of Intercontinental flights and 2 hours before European/Domestic departures.
FCO Airport Terminals
There are two terminals, T1 and T3 (T2 is no longer in operation).
T1 mostly domestic and Schengen flights
T3 International flights, non-Schengen and a few Schengen flights
Keep in mind that there are high security measures in place at the areas dedicated to USA airlines inside the terminals. This means that sometimes passports need to be shown at the entrance to the area. This also means that passengers not travelling from this terminal (e.g. the TM) are not allowed into the area. This means that you will not be able to take the group all the way to the main check-in area (where they drop-off their luggage, get their boarding card and can do VAT refund procedures).
