Leon – Santiago de Compostela and Reverse

December 19, 2025

53406NOR

Full day drive along the old pilgrims’ route – El Camino de Santiago.

If you stop in Astorga for lunch, have your driver drop you off at the round- about of Av. De la Ponferrada and Av. De las Murallas. From here, walk your group up to the Palacio Episcopal de Astorga (just down the street from the cathedral). Designed by Gaudi around the same time he was working on Parc Guell and Sagrada Familia.

Astorga is known for its Cocido Maragato – a cocido like any, but it is eaten in reverse, so main course of meat and garbanzo beans first and then soup. The Maragatos were a tribe that lived in this area, who were constantly under siege and therefore decided to eat the most nutritious part of their meal first before they had to make a run for it!
