New ELA Lesson Plan: The Danger of a Single Story

“The single story creates stereotypes, and the problem with stereotypes is not that they are untrue, but that they are incomplete.” – Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie 

This new lesson plan is for English Language Arts teachers who want to help students understand the importance of considering different perspectives in expository or persuasive writing.

Using Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie’s TED talk “The Danger of a Single Story” and Sherman Alexie’s short story “Superman and Me,” students will craft their own definitions of a stereotype, make connections between the texts and themselves and ultimately use those reflections in an essay.
