Glacier Express spectacular train ride through the Swiss Alps
- Check your voucher for train departure time and place – groups may very rarely be booked from Brig – this is only possible in summer as it involves a long (3½ hour) drive over the spectacular Furka Pass.
- If you are starting this excursion in Chur you may well be booked on the 11.26. In this case, leave Engelberg by 8.00 at the latest. In reverse there is a train from Andermatt at 11.54. In summer there are additional trains in both directions one hour later. Double-check all times for amendments.
- The driver has to get around the mountains to pick you up. Tell him to leave as soon as you arrive at your departure point, as the train will be faster than the bus. Be aware of driver’s hours.
- There should be a rail bar and a restaurant on the train but the group may want to have a picnic lunch in the train. In this case, ask them to do food shopping the previous day.
Engelberg – Chur 175 km 3 hrs
Chur – Andermatt (Glacier Express) 2½ hrs
Andermatt – Engelberg 80 km 1½ hr
Engelberg – Brig 160 km 3½ hrs
08.00/08.45 Leave Engelberg. Take the road to Stans and then the N2/N14/4 towards Luzern, Zurich, Wadenswil, where you pick up the N3 towards Chur. Alternatively take the N2 towards Gotthard then national road 2 to Andermatt where they can spend time before the train.
11.00/10.15 Arrive Chur/Andermatt. Set down at the station. Give free time, if there is any, for picnic shopping. There are shops in the old town opposite the station. Meanwhile you exchange your voucher for tickets.
11.15/11.40 Lead the group to the platform (the train will not be there yet).
11.26/11.54 Train leaves from Chur/Andermatt station.
13.52/14.15 Train arrives in Andermatt/Chur. Locate your bus and drive back to Engelberg. Follow reverse route.
15.30/17.45 Arrive in Engelberg.
