  • Passports should be brought with you (just to be on the safe side) as, although there are no routine checks at the border, buses are routinely stopped and pull over travelling Austria-Bavaria (but not Bavaria-Austria)
  • Lunch is often included on this day instead of dinner.
  • There are two official Terminals for setting down and picking up groups:

Terminal Nord (Paris-Lodron Strasse)

Terminal Sud   (Nonntal)

  • The office will have booked you a timed slot at the appropriate terminal(s) – you have a 20 minute official slot, although there is some leeway if you are running early or late. Almost all tours will begin at Paris-Lodron and you will also leave again from here, unless you are going to the Salt Mines. In that case you will pick up your bus in Nonntal.
  • For groups visiting Salzburg, the bus will stay at one of two coach parks (Nord and Sud), parking is free provided a timed slot for drop off at Paris-Lodron or Nonntal has been booked in advance.
  • The city guide and entrances to Mozart’s house are both paid by voucher.
  • Be aware that guiding by non-licensed guides (i.e. you!) is strictly prohibited and punishable by a fine, so leave this to the city guide during the morning and do not attempt to do so during free time.
  • You may have a visit to the Salt Mines in the afternoon.  If so, free time will be extremely limited and instead of a free afternoon, refer to the page for the Salt Mines.  Immediately after that visit you will return to Munich.

Munich – Salzburg        132km 2 hours minimum

07.45 Departure from Munich.  Take the A8 towards Rosenheim and Salzburg, then the A1 towards Vienna.  Exit at Salzburg Nord and follow the blue signs to Terminal Nord (Paris-Lodron Strasse)

10.00 Rendezvous with the guide to start the sightseeing tour, which is done

on foot.  This is quite a lot of walking if you have any “non-walkers”.

There are toilets across the road under the trees outside the Mirabell

Gardens.  Make a rendezvous with the driver for departure to lunch

after the tour if your restaurant is not in the city centre.

The walking tour should include:

  • The Mirabell Gardens
  • St Peter’s cemetery
  • The Cathedral (Dom) – outside views, entrance fee charged now
  • The Getreidegasse (Mozart’s House)
  • A walk through the different squares.

If necessary, take the group back to Paris-Lodron Strasse after the tour and drive to your restaurant for lunch.

After lunch, return to Paris-Lodron Strasse and drop off for free time, make a final departure time for Munich.

If you are going to the Salt Mines after lunch, make a meeting point (e.g. in Mozartplatz) and walk the group to Terminal Süd (Nonntal) as it is in the correct direction for Hallein and this will save you considerable time rather than leaving from Paris-Lodron-Strasse.

16.00 Return to Munich by the same route.

FREE TIME IN SALZBURG

Salzburg is quite expensive, but there are some typical specialities – small ornaments, spice bouquets, decorated candles etc. sold in the outside markets.  Not to mention the ubiquitous Mozart’s balls!!  Some shops are closed on Saturday afternoons and most are closed on Sundays.

Hohensalzburg Fortress is not usually included in the sightseeing tour, but can be suggested for free time.  A return ticket on the Hohensalzburg Festungsbahn including entrance to the fortress museums with audioguide costs €14.00 (Adult); €5.70 (Student) – this now includes entry into a number of the museums. A “funicular only” ticket no longer exists. In the evening when the fortress is closed, tickets are considerably cheaper.

Group members may just want to explore the city on foot or perhaps hire a bicycle for a short time (from by the cathedral).  A look inside some of the churches is highly recommended while one of Salzburg’s many cafes may provide some afternoon Kaffee und Kuchen.
