Excursion

  • Check your voucher for departure time (Jungfraubahnen

Interlaken, – see Yellow Pages for number)

  • Tell your group to bring sunglasses and sunscreen, to wear sensible footwear and to take an additional jumper or jacket with them. There is snow up here even in summer.
  • Be sure that everybody is prepared for the high altitude. (Mention the possibility of dizziness and respiratory problems).  People who feel ill or ‘fragile’ should stay in Wengen.
  • This is a half day excursion but you can easily make it a full day one, if it is sunny and you have a group who want to do some hiking (or skiing – remembering insurance – at the top).  Remember that you have a group ticket and, therefore, you cannot have split departures from the Jungfraujoch.
  • If you have a sunny day, suggest a picnic lunch either at the Kleine Scheidegg or at the Wengernalp (you can interrupt your train journey on your way down, but be sure to inform the train personnel).

Wengen – Jungfraujoch

Walk to the train station.  Allow at least 20 minutes before the departure time of the train.  (The trains leave about every 30 minutes and have a strict timetable)

You change trains at the Kleine Scheidegg, make sure that the group doesn’t wander off as you normally have only 5 minutes.

Wengen – Kleine Scheidegg 25-30 mins

Kleine Scheidegg – Jungfraujoch           50-60 mins

Inform the train attendant of which train you will be taking for your descent.

Tell the group to be at the station 10 mins prior to departure and that they should keep to the marked paths.

Jungfraujoch

THINGS TO DO

Visit the sculptures of the ice palace (no entrance fee, but not very exciting either).

Admire the view from the Jungfraujoch Plateau or the ‘Sphynx Terrace’.  Particularly breathtaking is the view to the South (Aletschgletscher).

Skiing.  There is a short lift near the station.  You can rent boots and skis there. (Remember the insurance implications!)

There is no longer husky drawn sleigh riding available at the Jungfrau because of a lack of demand.

Unless you have a very sporty group and your teachers want the students to ski, do not stay more than an hour.

Jungfraujoch – Wengen

A good place to stop for lunch is the Kleine Scheidegg (two restaurants).

If you have good walkers you can suggest the following descents on foot:

Kleine Scheidegg – Wengen 3 hrs

Wengernalp – Wengen 2 hrs

Wengernalp – Mettlenalp – Wengen 2hrs 30 mins

Allmend – Wengen 45 mins
