Rothenburg – walking tour and visit of St Jakobskirche
Rothenburg is completely closed to tour buses, the only access allowed is for hotel transfers – and even this now generally requires a Bus Vignette, which must be applied for in advance. See
http://www.parken-rothenburg.de/details-und-antraege/busvignette-details-en/
Therefore your sightseeing is done on foot. The most convenient official bus park is at Parking P1 outside the walls at the Hospital Bastion (Spitaltor).
Unless you are staying in Rothenburg, on arrival walk the group from the bus park (where there are pay WCs in a large new block) to the market square. You can start your tour and point out several places whilst walking (see walking tour notes). There are additional toilets behind the town hall. You might want to get maps for the group from the tourist office on the corner of square.
Make sure the group knows the meeting point (either at the hotel, the bus or walk them back after meeting in market square).
Sightseeing Includes:
· The Marktplatz and the Glockenspiel
· St Jakob’s Church (inside visit)
· Herrengasse and the Castle garden
· Schmiedgasse at least as far as the Plönlein (for photos – although note you will be passing this if your bus stopped at Spitaltor)
THINGS TO DO
– Walk around the city walls. (Carefully, if it’s dark!)
– Climb the town hall tower.
– Visit the Criminal Museum.
– Visit St Wolfgang’s fortified church.
– Shop at Käthe Wolfahrt’s Christkindlmarkt for Christmas ornaments and
a full range of German souvenirs, on Herrengasse.

Currency Exchange
Currency exchange is no longer possible in Rothenburg. All banks, the tourist information centre and hotels have stopped doing it, so other arrangements will need to be made before arriving here.

NB
· You can do your sightseeing either before or after lunch (Depending on time, opening hours of St. Jakobs).
· When walking from the Spitaltor you can start part of tour, Plönlein, etc since you are walking that way and it saves time later.
· At the end of the visit either meet group in town centre and walk them back or point out the route clearly – the side streets look much the same!
· If walking the walls, they probably won’t have time to do the whole town unless staying in Rothenburg.
