Split
City Sightseeing
The name and phone number of your guide will be on the Effetto voucher. Make sure to confirm the meeting time/place as well as the length of the tour (approx 2 hours). There is only one place where the bus may drop off and collect in Split: on the boardwalk by the harbour. It can be very busy, but it is only a 5-minute walk to the old town and the palace. Warn your group that they must alight quite quickly and the bus will almost certainly not be in exactly the same place to pick them up later!
To Do / Know
- Pax should have a bottle of water with them and should wear comfy shoes as the entire tour is on foot.
- It’s very easy for your group to get lost because of the maze of streets. It is best to have a designated spot to meet up if anyone gets separated (e.g. at the picture sign of Diocletian’s Palace by the harbour, which is very close to where you’ve got off the bus)
- Public toilets are located in the cluster of buildings (restaurants/shops/Air Terminal Bus stop) along the boardwalk where the bus drops you off, as well as in Diocletian’s Palace on the lower level.
- There are plenty of ATMs and exchange bureau around the peripheries of the old town.
- Make sure everyone knows where and when to be back after free time, which may be much of the afternoon, and ensure they will be punctual because of bus stopping issues. Make a rendezvous time with your driver, if appropriate.
City Sightseeing General Tour
- The guide generally begins the tour outside Diocletian’s Palace (back of the Palace facing the harbour) at the sign that depicts what the palace looked like. This is to give an overview and some perspective.
- Enter Diocletian’s Cellars via the Brass Gate (topographical map of Split area near ticket-seller)
- Peristyle Square
- Entry Vestibule (klapa singers likely to be performing here)
- Cathedral of St Dominus (exterior only)
- Jupiter’s Temple
- Cardo (as in Cardo Decumanus)
- Golden Gate (main entrance of Palace) and Bishop Gregory of Nin statue (rub his toe for good luck)
- People’s Square (Naradni Trg)
- The Riva (seaside pedestrian promenade)
