City sightseeing with local guide including inside visit of Mozart’s Birthplace
Please note that the MAA itinerary includes the return funicular ticket to the fortress and grounds instead of the Mozartgeburtshaus. This may also be the case on Encore itineraries: check your vouchers and Teacher Itinerary.
§ The city guide is usually paid by voucher
§ Entrances to Mozart’s house are paid by voucher for which you may need to show the bar code provided by the London office
§ Timing will vary according to your schedule. Check rendezvous time and place with local guide on your voucher and call ahead to confirm them. You can use this opportunity to discuss the tour
§ There are 2 setting down and picking up points :
Terminal Nord (Paris-Lodron Strasse)
Terminal Süd (Nonntal)
You must have a booked, timed slot to drop off here during the day. Your bus company should have done this already, but check with your driver at the start of the tour. There is only 15 minutes leeway with the slot so plan journey times extremely carefully!
§ For groups overnighting or having a meal in Salzburg there are 2 parking lots “Nord” or “Süd” with a parking fee that is included in the €70 bus drop off slot fee.
Let the group know in advance that this is a walking tour! They may need to be armed with rain gear and should have appropriate footwear. Be sure also to explain clearly to the driver when and where he needs to meet you.
Sightseeing should include:
· The Mirabell gardens
· St Peter’s cemetery
· The Cathedral (Dom) (public toilets (€0.50) opposite and to the left of cathedral entrance, looked at with your back to the cathedral entrance)
· A walk through the different squares
· The Getreidegasse.
It may include the Hohensalzburg fortress (check Teacher Itinerary), if not then this can be suggested for free time. Interior entries are included, but you need to buy an additional or combination ticket if you want to take the guided tour of the interior.
Give free time suggestions. If it is lunchtime, there are less expensive places towards the far end of the Getreidegasse and a beer garden in the courtyard of the Sternbräu brewery through a passage on the Getreidegasse. Snacks can be bought in the market behind the Mozarthaus. For adults who are looking for something special, you can suggest the St. Peterskeller, (established 803) by the cemetery gate – one of Europe’s oldest restaurants.
Be sure that the group knows how to get back to the bus/hotel. If you are using the Nonntal terminal it’s always best to make a central rendezvous
(e.g. by the Residence Fountain in the Mozartplatz), and lead the group back to the bus all together.

THINGS TO DO
Hohensalzburg Fortress
Use the Funicular (Festungsbahn). There is a spectacular view from the terraces. Tour using an audioguide.
Mozart’s Wohnhaus
In Makartplatz across the river. The reconstructed Wohnhaus has an extensive Mozart exhibition.
Hellbrunn (Wasserspiele)
The archbishop’s palace and trick water gardens! A fun visit. Can be reached by local bus (it is a 30 min, 7km journey) but normally needs to be a group excursion. Call in advance during peak seasons.
Residenzgallerie
Collection includes Rembrandt, Reubens and Titian.
Encourage them to have a look at some of the churches – the Franciscan church is particularly interesting but cannot be visited as a group.
Modern Art Museum
In the Rupertinum, Max Reinhardt Platz. There is also the new museum section on the Mönchsberg – Museum der Moderne
Wolf Dietrich Mausoleum
In St Sebastian’s cemetery, across the river on the Linzer Gasse. An interesting curiosity, the cemetery also contains the tombs of Mozart’s wife and father.
Bicycle rentals
Reasonably priced and easy to find in the old town (Residenzplatz), one of the best ways to see the city on a fine day.
Fiacres (Horse carriage)
Also easy to find but rather more expensive. (Residenzplatz)
SHOPPING
The glitzy boutiques in the Altstadt are very expensive. There are always stalls open on the Domplatz selling souvenirs and handicrafts.
Morning market on the Universitätsplatz. (Buy a picnic! Huge Pretzels)
Linzer Gasse is the only pedestrian shopping area on the far side of the river.
CAFES
In addition to those mentioned above:
Tomaselli, the most famous of the Salzburg cafés
Café Mozart in Getreidegasse.

Augustinerbräu
Monastery brewery, the biggest and oldest beer hall and garden in Salzburg. Very “echt”. Behind the Mullner church at the North end of the Altstadt. It closes at 11pm. Large groups will have to split up for seating. In order to obtain a drink, you have to first buy a token at the tills, grab a mug, and have it filled outside the rooms where everyone sits.
