How to Apply for the U.K. Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA)
If you’re traveling to or connecting through the U.K., the new Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) is a necessary step for entry. Starting January 8, 2025, all visa-exempt travelers with non-European passports must apply for an ETA before departing. This guide provides clear, actionable steps to ensure your application process is quick and hassle-free.
Step 1
Access the U.K. ETA Application Portal
Download the official ETA app from Apple’s App Store or Google Play. If you can’t download the app for some reason, you can also apply via the official UK ETA Website.
Step 3
Start Your Application
Click “Apply for an ETA” and select your nationality, travel purpose (e.g., “Tourism”), and intended arrival date in the U.K.
Step 4
Provide Personal Details
Enter your personal information exactly as it appears on your passport, including your full name, date of birth, and nationality. This ensures your application is processed accurately.
Step 5
Upload Passport Image
Upload a clear photo or scan of the information page of your passport. Ensure all text and the photo are legible.
Step 6
Complete Security and Travel Questions
Answer questions about criminal history, visa refusals, or other travel eligibility factors.
Step 7
Review Your Application
Check all information for accuracy before submitting. Errors may result in delays or denials.
Step 8
Pay the ETA Fee
Use a credit or debit card to pay the £10 (approximately $13) application fee.
Step 9
Wait for Confirmation and Travel with Your Approved ETA
Applications may take up to 72 hours to process. Once approved, your ETA will be digitally linked to your passport, so you will not need to show additional documentation when entering the UK. However, it’s a good idea to have your acceptance email accessible during travel, just in case.
