Rome and Madrid

July 14 - 21, 2025

Itinerary

The itinerary is the starting point to your tour, but it’s not set in stone. Your group leader may make changes leading up to departure.

Day 1, Monday July 14: Overnight Flight

Depart from the USA.

Day 2, Tuesday July 15: Rome

After meeting your ACIS Tour Manager and settling in to your hotel at the heart of bustling, historic Rome, practice your language skills by ordering una coppa gelato and enjoy people-watching in one of the city's stunning piazzas. (D)

Day 3, Wednesday July 16: Rome

Rome is called “The Eternal City” because the ancient Romans believed that no matter what empires rose and fell, Rome would endure forever. Today's panoramic drive of the city is a great introduction to the many phases of Roman history. Our local expert accompanies you through the Vatican Museums, including the Sistine Chapel, and St. Peter's Basilica. The best part is that these are timed reservations, meaning you'll breeze right by the long lines facing other tourists. The afternoon is yours to perhaps explore some of Rome's more eclectic attractions, such as the Caravaggio paintings on display in the church of San Luigi dei Francesi or Appia Antica park, which encompasses part of the original Appian Way, built in early 300 B.C. Tonight, enjoy a pizza dinner the way it is meant to be: authentic and Roman. We finish the day by introducing you to the fine art of the Italian passeggiata with an evening stroll to Piazza Navona. (B,D)

Day 4, Thursday July 17: Rome

Today you'll go inside the iconic and historic Colosseum with a local guide (another line-avoiding timed reservation) and learn the many stories of this nearly 2,000-year-old Roman landmark that's considered one of the architectural wonders of the ancient world. Your ticket also includes entrance to the nearby Roman Forum if your group has time. Later you will live la dolce vita as you visit one of Rome's most historic gelaterias to see how the famous Italian-style ice cream is produced during a gelateria tour and tasting. Your learning will be rewarded with a sweet sample of your favorite flavor as well as one of the gelateria's iconic Sanpietrino treats. For tonight's passeggiata, you may wish to venture out to the Spanish Steps and Trevi Fountain. (B,D)

Day 5, Friday July 18: Madrid

Board a flight from Rome to Madrid, Spain's bustling capital city in the center of the country. Get up to speed on Madrid's most iconic plazas and elegant boulevards on an afternoon walk. Later, you're free to explore more of this culturally rich city at your own pace, perhaps savoring traditional tapas, roaming through bustling open markets like the Mercado de Maravillas or visiting under-the-radar attractions such as the Museo Lazaro Galdiano, home to an amazing private collection of Spanish art and jewelry. (B,D)

Day 6, Saturday July 19: Madrid

Madrid's rich heritage comes alive on a guided morning walking tour that showcases classic Spanish boulevards, grand plazas and the diverse architecture of modern-day Madrid. Highlights include the Teatro Real Opera House, Royal Palace, Plaza Mayor, Puerta del Sol and Neptune Fountain. You'll also go inside the magnificent Prado (skipping the lines with a timed reservation), one of the world's premier art museums. Here an expert will provide illuminating commentary about the artwork of Velázquez, Goya, Raphael, Rubens and Bosch. Even the 18th-century neo-classical building that houses the collection is stunning. (B,D)

Day 7, Sunday July 20: Madrid

Discover more of Madrid's museums and parks at your own speed today. Don't miss the impressive Royal Palace, the official residence of Spain's royal family. Or you may opt to take a full-day excursion to nearby Toledo, the city where the world-famous artist El Greco made his home and created his most famous works. Toledo offers a rich mix of cultures, thanks to a unique blend of Christian, Jewish and Muslim heritages. The excursion includes lunch at a breathtaking spot with a panoramic view over the city. (B,D)

Day 8, Monday July 21: Departure

Depart for the USA.

Optional Extensions and Extra Nights:

Enhance your European experience with a two-night extension to Barcelona via AVE from Madrid, including sightseeing. (B)
