Itinerary

The itinerary is the starting point to your tour, but it’s not set in stone. Your group leader may make changes leading up to departure.

Day 1, Saturday April 1: San Miguel de Allende

Depart from the USA. Arrive in Leon, meet your tour manager and transfer to your hotel in San Miguel de Allende. In the afternoon, enjoy a walking tour around this historic city known for its mild climate, thermal springs and colonial era architecture. (D)

Day 2, Sunday April 2: San Miguel de Allende

Called the "Forge of Independence" for the important role it played in gaining Mexico's independence from Spain, San Miguel de Allende is a fascinating place to discover on your morning sightseeing tour. From visiting a museum of local archaeological finds to seeing architecturally exquisite churches and 400-year-old restored homes, you'll get a feel for how San Miguel manages to be both a contemporary Mexican city and a colonial gem. In the afternoon visit the local market whose stalls are piled high with tropical fruits, colorful flowers, fresh vegetables, herbs and chiles. Buy ingredients for authentic fresh salsas and learn the techniques to create them in a cooking class. (B,D)

Day 3, Monday April 3: San Miguel de Allende

Test your inner silversmith this morning as you learn how to craft jewelry in a silver jewelry making workshop. In the afternoon visit Mineral de Pozos where you can hike through the deserted ruins of the once famous silver mining town. (B,D)

Day 4, Tuesday April 4: San Miguel de Allende

Discover where the battle for Mexican independence began on your morning excursion to Dolores Hidalgo and take a walking tour of this colonial city. Then enjoy time to shop for Talavera ceramic pieces or try exotic flavored ice cream before continuing to La Gruta Thermal Hot Springs for a swim. Return to San Miguel de Allende and put your dancing shoes on as you continue to explore the culture and traditions of Mexico during a dance lesson. (B,D)

Day 5, Wednesday April 5: San Miguel de Allende

Today you will visit Cañada de la Virgen, an Otomi archaeological site. This site was opened to the public in recent years, as it is one of Mexico's best kept secrets. here you will learn about pre-historic Mexico, the purpose of the ruins and the surrounding areas. Pass through the community of Marroquin de Abajo and breathtaking scenery before you reach the Sanctuary of Atotonilco, famous for its religious art. Founded in 1746, this church played an important role in Mexican independence. Return to San Miguel de Allende along the banks of the Laja River. (B,L,D)

Day 6, Thursday April 6: Guanajuato

Today travel to Guanajuato, a colonial city and university town with a maze of narrow streets and winding alleys. Visit the birth place of Diego Rivera, prominent Mexican painter, then off to the funicular to see a panoramic view of the city. Great way to view all sights from above and get some great pictures. A sightseeing tour shows you the Templo de la Compañía, Teatro Juárez and Callejón del Beso. (B,D)

Day 7, Friday April 7: Departure

Depart for the USA.
