Arrive in Munich, meet your ACIS Tour Manager and begin to explore the capital of Bavaria. The city was called the Hauptstadt der Bewegung, or Capital of the Movement, and was considered the birthplace of the Nazi Party. Perhaps start your stay with a walk through the Königsplatz, a monumental square used for Nazi Party mass rallies and now a center for culture and art, housing Munich’s best museums and galleries.
Begin the day with an expertly guided sightseeing tour to sites like Marienplatz with its famed Glockenspiel, the Viktualienmarkt food and flower market and the surfers on the Isar River in the Englischer Garten. Then travel to the somber Dachau Concentration Camp Memorial, the first of the Nazi regime’s concentration camps and a stark reminder of man’s potential for inhumanity. Although not actually a “death camp,” it is a compelling visit. Back in Munich, enjoy an evening visit to the Olympic Park.
Drive to beautiful Nuremberg to discover the Zeppelintribüne at the Nazi Party Rally Grounds, followed by a look at the Palace of Justice, where the infamous Nuremberg war trials were held from 1945 to 1949. Then enjoy the historical insight given by audio guides on your visit of the Nuremberg Documentation Center, a museum that provides socio-political context for the Nazi reign of terror. Continue on to lovely Prague, the capital of the Czech Republic.
Start with a guided sightseeing tour of this charming and architecturally significant city, one of the few major European cities spared from World War II bombing. View the picturesque Malá Strana (or “Lesser Quarter” neighborhood, named for its location at the foot of Prague's ancient castle) and the 14th century Charles Bridge. Often lined with street vendors and musicians, the bridge connects the Malá Strana to historic Old Town Prague. Later, we'll make an excursion to visit Terezín. Contained within the walls of the famed fortress of Theresienstadt, this unique former ghetto and Nazi transit camp was used by the Nazis as a propaganda effort to fool the Allies and as a last stop for prisoners before deporting them to extermination camps like Auschwitz or Treblinka. The stories of victims and survivors—many of whom were children, artists, musicians, scholars and scientists—are remembered with two compelling museums, the crematorium, and a field of remembrance. We'll return to Prague in the late afternoon, in time to catch the evening performers in the Old Town Square.
Journey to charming Olomouc and view the 115-foot-tall Holy Trinity Column, a baroque religious monument completed in 1754. The ancient capital of Moravia, Olomouc boasts the second-largest historic-preservation zone in the Czech Republic—behind only Prague. Continue on to Krakow, Poland’s second largest city. We’ll head out on foot to visit the historic Kazimierz Jewish Quarter.
Begin your day with a guided sightseeing tour to view the façade of the spectacular Wawel Castle, one of the country's most important historic and cultural sites, and visit inside its Cathedral. Be sure to brave the climb up the narrow Bell Tower. Then enjoy a fascinating visit to the enamelware factory once owned by Oskar Schindler, a hero who saved the lives of 1,200 Jews and whose story was popularized in the famous Steven Spielberg movie Schindler's List.
Learn more about the tragedy of the Holocaust as you travel today to Auschwitz-Birkenau Concentration Camp, now a heartbreaking memorial to the more than one million Jews who died here. Then return to Krakow for your last evening abroad.
