Excursion

Check train departure time on your voucher and adapt the schedule as necessary. You may take be taking cable car up then returning by train. You can also make it into a full day’s excursion.

· The day before, check booking with the Zugspitzbahn and ask whether the Eibsee cable car is operating. (It is overhauled in the summer).

· Tell the group to dress warmly. Remember also sun glasses and sun screen.

· Your ascent is governed by your train reservation. If you do not have a timetable to keep, your tickets entitle you to use any method of descent, ie. cable car or cog railway (to Eibsee or Garmisch)

· When buying the tickets, fill in your voucher with the exact number of students and adults.

· Tell the group to keep their tickets with them throughout the trip, as they need them at each transfer.

· The whole system can get very crowded, especially in Spring, as it provides access to high altitude ski slopes.

· If your excursion is followed by a visit to the salt mines in Berchtesgaden, be aware that you must leave Garmisch three and a half hours before the mines close. From November 1st until 1st of May last entry time is 15.00, thereafter 17.00. You can save time by using the Eibsee cable car both ways.

GARMISCH – ZUGSPITZE BY COG RAILWAY

Your train reservation may be from Garmisch or from Eibsee. Drive to the Zugspitzbahn station in Garmisch (behind the railway station) or in Eibsee. The driver leaves you there and they meet you again at the Eibsee cable car bus park or the reverse depending upon your routing.

The cog railway takes you to Zugspitzplatt station, the departure point for the cable cars. The last part of the journey is through a long tunnel. Do not be surprised if you have to change trains in Eibsee.

The train will take you up as far as the Schneefern glacier.

At Schneefern you transfer to the Gletscherbahn cable car, which takes you to Zugspitze Gipfel Station – the top of the mountain.

Give the group a meeting time and place and be sure that they know that you are not going down the same way. 30 minutes at the summit is normally sufficient.

There is an outside terrace, snack bar and toilet facilities.

The Eibsee cable car arrives at/leaves from the bottom of the Zugspitze building. While they are enjoying the view (or fog), tell the cable car attendant that you have a group. S/he can usually run an extra descent for you. Otherwise the cable cars leave at regular intervals.

The huge bus and car park at Eibsee serves both the Eibsee cable car and the rack railway station.
