Excursion
Half-day excursion from Engelberg or Lucerne
- Tell your group to dress warmly, have appropriate footwear and to remember sunglasses and sunscreen. There is often snow at the top, even in summer.
- If you are coming from Lucerne, add 45 minutes for the coach ride, Engelberg – Lucerne is 34km.
- Check the weather, especially as it may be different in Lucerne.
- Check on your voucher if the Ice Flyer is included. Should there be no indication on the voucher and the teacher(s) requests this, call the London office.
The cable cars run from 08.30 to 16.40 (October – May) and from 08.30 – 17.00 (June – September). On arrival at the cable car terminal, make a rendezvous for departure, you can either return individually or as a group but ensure they are clear about this. An hour at the top is normally sufficient but you will need rather more time if the group takes the Ice Flyer to the glacier. Check the time of the last descent. The descent usually takes around 45 mins, but allow extra time if it looks extremely crowded.
Buy/collect tickets from the Group ticket office (be sure to amend your voucher, if necessary, to reflect the correct number of passengers). Distribute tickets and start the ascent together. Tell the group to try to stay together (It can be very busy, especially during ski season). However, if the group gets separated between the three different stages they just have to keep following the signs for Titlis.
The first part of the ride is in small gondolas from Engelberg to Trübsee (warn them that they do not get off at Gerschnialp, the first station!). Next, a regular cable car takes you up from Trübsee to Stand. The top section, between Stand and Titlis, is in the world’s first rotating cable car. Show them the rendezvous point on arrival at the top.
At the summit there are cafes and restaurants, indoor observation platforms, outdoor viewing deck, suspension bridge, and paths (snowy) as well as an ice grotto (all free). There are also souvenir shops, toilets and telephones.
You can also take the Ice Flyer to the glacier for the tire sledging – this is an extra charge and adds around an hour to the excursion.
NB: If staying in Engelberg you may want to walk to the cable cars and get your driver to meet you at the bottom after the visit to drive to Lucerne for lunch/afternoon visit if appropriate.
