Excursion
Dachau Concentration Camp Memorial visit, film if available.
· You need cash for leaflets (€0.50 each)
· Driver pays parking fees
· Mention to the group the night before that a visit to Dachau deserves some respect and that they should dress appropriately.
· Dachau is open 7 days a week from 9am to 5pm.
· The old 20 minute-long film has been replaced with a new one which last 35 minutes. It is shown in English at 10.15am, 11.45am, and 2.00pm. It is not essential for your group to watch it particularly now in its lengthened form, but they may want to and so you should plan timings around it.
· You are NOT permitted to guide inside the camp, so do your commentary on the bus beforehand.
09.00 Departure from Munich. With a low coach you can exit Munich
14.00 taking the Dachauer Strasse all the way. Otherwise join the Ring
at the Olympiapark. Dachau is signed from there. After you
have gone past the MAN factory you soon come to a right turn
signed “Gedenkstätte Dachau”. For obvious reasons there are
more signs to the town of Dachau than to the Gedenkstätte, so
be alert. It is very easy to miss the signs.
09.45 Arrive in Dachau. Park in the coach park (driver pays), make a
14.45 rendezvous there for departure. Follow the path around from
the rear of the coach park past the Information Centre to the
entrance to the camp, which takes you through the [copy of the original] ‘Arbeit macht frei’ gate. There are info boards as well as the new Information Centre on this route. Most of the camp has been demolished, the administration block has become the
museum and there are two barrack huts and several memorials,
which can be viewed. Continue with your group to the entrance
of the museum. Take enough leaflets for your group.
(You can pay and get a receipt from the small office at the
entrance.) The cinema is located in the centre of this block. Tell
your group to be there 10 minutes before the next showing.
At Dachau
There are toilets inside the main building housing the museum and cinema and in the Information Centre. Allow a very minimum of 75 minutes for the visit; some groups will want up to 2.5 hours.
