City Sightseeing
The name and phone number of your guide will be on the Effetto voucher. Make sure to confirm the meeting time/place as well as the length of the tour (approx 2 hours; might meet you at hotel). Also ask the guide how many cruise ships are due in town; if your tour coincides with a busy cruise day, you might choose to start the tour early (cruisers usually descend en masse upon the Old town at 10 am) and/or to adjust the routing. It can get unbearably full and crowded in summer. As groups generally fall in love with the city and want free time, it is not a bad idea to start early in any case.
If the guide suggests beginning the day with a panoramic view of the city from above and then entering the Old Town via the Ploce (PLOH-chey) Gate, bear in mind that this diversion adds at least 30 minutes (Guide may promise 20!). It is also not ideal for the coach. If you choose to do this, and if there is space for the coach to pull off, pax can get off the coach to take photos. If you are headed out of town to Montenegro another day, you will pass the panoramic overlook then. Therefore, it wouldn’t make sense to do it on city sightseeing day.
To Do / Know
- Pax should have a bottle of water with them and should wear comfy shoes as the entire tour is on foot.
- The order of the sightseeing can vary depending on crowds, etc – discuss this with your guide.
- Public toilets are located just before entering the Pile (PEE-leh) Gate (after the Hilton up the hill to the left); just past the Pile Gate to the right of Onofrio’s Big Fountain in the Tourist Information Point; and in the Old Port on the eastern side of town.
- Placa (aka “the Stradun”) is the main promenade of town running from the Pile Gate east roughly to the Old Port on the other side of the Old Town. It is about 200 m in length.
